Dudley Trading Standards service is responsible for enforcing over 50 Acts of Parliament and over 1,000 different regulations. Our work under these acts is threefold:-
We are happy to assist and advise all businesses, based within the borough, about any aspect of consumer protection legislation that may have an impact on their business. Please contact us either by email or on our dedicated business advice telephone number 0845 330 3313.
LAW ENFORCEMENT
We may take action against businesses who disregard the law, some of the areas of law we enforce concern:
Weights and Measures
Credit
Descriptions of Goods
The Safety of Food
The Safety of Goods
The way in which prices are indicated
Underage sales
This is only a brief outline of our work, a full list of all primary legislation enforced by Trading Standards is available here. Please, however, note that Dudley Trading Standards do not enforce legislation concerning the health and welfare of animals, this is done by Environmental Health. In addition the licensing of petrol stations to store petrol and premises to store explosives (including fireworks) is carried out by the West Midlands Fire Service, they can be contacted on 0121 544 7209.
Unfortunately, there are a number of things we can’t do, sometimes the amount of help we can given you is restricted by the powers given to us by Acts of Parliament.
We cannot for example:
Obtain a refund for you, but we can advise you if you may be entitled to one .
Close a business down, but we can ensure that the business complies with the law.
Take action where no criminal law has been broken, but you may still be able to sue the business yourself.
Recommend a business. However, please see our Fix A Home list which we have put together to help you find a tradesperson to do work on your home.
