The Benefits of Working
Going back to work doesn't mean giving up all your benefits.
Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit can be paid to people who are working and earning. There are other benefits and credits to help you with the move back into work, and support you as you continue working. Almost everyone can be better off in work.

Extra help for Pensioners
Are you a pensioner with savings below £16,000? Do you receive housing
and council tax benefit?
As of the 2nd November 2009 a change in housing and council tax benefit rules means that more pensioners may now be entitled to help with payment of their rent and council tax.
The change means that if you are a pensioner aged over 60, the first £10,000 of your savings or investments will not be counted when calculating housing and council tax benefit entitlement, an increase from the previous limit of £6,000.
This change means that many pensioners who were not previously eligible for benefit will now be able to claim help towards paying your rent or council tax. If you think you may now be entitled you can check to see if you qualify either by using our online benefits calulcator or by ringing 0300 5558100 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
If you are a pensioner who are already receives housing and council tax benefit, we will recalculate your benefit automatically and you do not need to do anything more.
Anybody who thinks they may now be entitled should get in touch with us to find out if they can claim help towards their rent and council tax – don’t miss out on what you are rightfully entitled to.
Extra help for families with children
Extra financial support towards rent and council tax payments may be available
to families already receiving child benefit.
As of the 2nd November 2009 a change in housing and council tax benefit rules means families may now be entitled to extra financial support towards your rent and council tax payments.
The rule change means that any income from child benefit payments will no longer be taken into account when calculating housing and council tax benefit.
This change means that many families who were not previously eligible for benefit will now be able to claim help towards paying your rent or council tax.
