The European parliament is the only directly elected EU body. Elections have been held every five years since 1979 - before that members were drawn from national parliaments.
In the 2009 Election about 375 million European citizens in 27 countries are eligible to vote with 736 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) being elected for a five-year term.
