What is children's services?

The directorate of children’s services is the part of the council with lead responsibility for services to children and young people.

The directorate is focused on improving the outcomes for all children and young people in Dudley. Our work is based on the framework within the Children’s Act 2004 and Every Child Matters – Change for Children incorporating the five key outcomes:

  • staying safe
  • being healthy
  • enjoying and achieving
  • making a positive contribution
  • achieve economic well-being

Education and learning

We are a beacon service providing education for more than 50,000 pupils who attend our 112 primary and secondary schools. Dudley works hard to help them do the very best they can. But learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. We also want people to gain the right skills and knowledge for work even after leaving school.

This section of our website contains information on learning in Dudley including an introduction to our ground-breaking Dudley Grid for Learning, one of the most successful private funding Initiative projects in UK education which provides Dudley pupils with exceptional IT access.

ContactPoint

- what’s it all about?
ContactPoint will be like a computer-based phone book and will help people who work with children to quickly find out who else is supporting the same child.

At the moment, it can take a long time for a professional (e.g. doctor or a social worker) to find this information and make contact with the right person which means the child may have to wait a long time to get the help they need.

ContactPoint is part of a larger programme called ‘Every Child Matters’.  It has been developed in response to a recommendation of the Laming Inquiry into the tragic death of Victoria Climbié

The plan involves everyone who works with children, and is about making sure that all children and young people can have a good life, whoever they are, and no matter what problems they may face.
