Childminding - applying

Ofsted require all childminders to complete local authority approved pre-registration training.

Pre-registration briefing

It is important that you attend the pre-registration briefing sessions. At the pre-registration briefing you will be given information about:

  • the legal requirements and application process

  • childminding as a job

  • pre-registration courses to support you in becoming a childminder

The pre-registration briefing sessions

The pre-registration briefing sessions run for four sessions and you will need to attend all four.

The course consists of the following modules:

  • the legal requirements for childminders

  • providing basic play and other activities for children

  • establishing a safe and healthy environment for young children 

  • training childminders need to attend

  • an overview of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Following this block of sessions, you will need to complete a childminder workbook, which is linked to The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge and the Childrens Workforce Development Council (CWDC) Induction Standards. You will need to complete Business, Child Protection Level 1, EYFS Level 1, First Aid and Inland Revenue training sessions.
