Any new students entering higher education after 1 September 1998 receive support under the provisions of The Education (Student Support) Regulations which are amended each year.

The majority of new students qualify for student loans for both living costs and tuition fee following the introduction of new fees arrangements.  A Maintenance Grant of up to £2,835 is available to new students, subject to a means-test. In addition, there are certain other grant elements, which are not repayable unlike the student loan, and these include, Disabled Student’s Allowances, Dependants and Childcare Grants where applicable.  There are also special provisions for Health Care students.  You can obtain copies of the following publications from Student Finance Service:

A guide to Financial Support for Higher Education Students in 2008/2009
Bridging the Gap: A guide to the disabled students’ allowances (DSAs) in higher education in 2008/2009;
Childcare Grant and other support for student parents in Higher Education in 2008/09;

These publications can be found on the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) website.
