Instrumental & Vocal Tuition in Schools
Over 4000 students in Dudley schools and colleges receive weekly instrumental & vocal tuition with Dudley Performing Arts.
Lessons are given by DPA’s specialist music staff. Students are normally taught for 30 lessons a year at their school during the school day. Lessons for new students will be in groups of up to 4 students. Where a DPA teacher judges that a student would benefit from an individual lesson, parents will be invited to apply for a Scholarship Lesson.
BRAVO! Tutor Books: Students initially learn from BRAVO! Dudley Performing Arts’ specially designed tutor books which link in with the national ‘Common Approach to instrumental tuition’. Each student is also given a practice diary to help them plan how to practice. The diary is also the main way students/teachers and parents communicate on a weekly basis.

Lesson Attendance and Absence
Students are expected to attend all timetabled lessons during 30 teaching weeks in our calendar.
Calendar details will be sent to all students who attend DPA lessons. Additional teaching weeks in the year cater for unavoidable absences. In order to account for the disruption caused each year by SATS and the start/end of each term, we have allocated several 'double' weeks throughout the year. In these weeks, students shall receive at least one lesson over the fortnight if they have outstanding weeks to catch up on. There may not be a lesson during these weeks if all 30 lessons have been achieved.
Lessons will not be made up when a student is absent through illness or family holiday. However, where a student is absent through illness for 4 or more consecutive lessons, a credit note will be made for that period of absence on production of a doctor's note.
When a DPA teacher is unavoidably absent from the calendar teaching programme, lessons missed will be made up at a mutually convenient time during the year. In case of a lengthy staff illness, an alternative teacher will be provided.
For further details see 'Terms of Agreement' in the Conditions of Service section
Student's Progress
Your child will be monitored throughout the year and you will receive a report at the end of the year.
In the Spring Term you will have the chance to discuss your child's progress with his/her DPA teacher.
There are opportunities for students to take music examinations by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Rock School, London College and Trinity Guildhall. An examination fee is charged. Please check individual examination board information sites for details of exam entry dates.
Instruments
Dudley Performing Arts has a stock of instruments which, if available, may be hired for a termly payment. The maximum loan period for certain instruments - clarinets, cornets, flutes and trumpets - is 2 years.
A few schools have their own instruments for loan. Please enquire at your child's school for availability. Alternatively, instruments can be leased, hired or bought from music retailers. If you choose this option, you are recommended to seek advice from DPA staff.
Please note: You will be expected to purchase sheet music, tutor books and accessories (such as replacement strings, rosin and valve oil).
We also operate an assisted purchase scheme to enable parents of our students to purchase instruments VAT free! Various criteria must be met to qualify for the scheme and a handling charge applies for those wishing to use this facility. Fill out our
Instrument Purchase Scheme form.
