Chaperone Information

The Children Performances (Regulations 1968) (as amended) states that in certain circumstances, children taking part in entertainment must be supervised by a Chaperone (Reg.12.1) and, if the Local Authority think fit (Reg 10.1), must be taught by a suitable tutor (Reg 10.3c).

If a child takes part in a performance for which they need a licence, this can include TV or filming, theatre, sporting activities or modelling, they will also require a chaperone (matron) who is responsible for their welfare.

The role of the registered Chaperone is to ensure that proper provision is made to secure a child's health, comfort, and kind treatment.

How to become a licensed chaperone

The Education Investigation Service will undertake the 'approval' of chaperones.

If you wish to apply to become a licensed chaperone (matron) for a specific production, you will need to ensure that you apply at least two months prior in order for the application to be processed.

Applicants will also have to apply to the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) for an Enhanced Certificate of Disclosure before approval as a chaperone (matron). This check is carried out through Dudley MBC and applicants should contact the address below for an application pack.
