Pupil Premium for Looked After Children

The Pupil Premium is a payment made by the government to schools to help raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils.

  • Each eligible pupil has been allocated £488 for the year from April 2011 to March 2012 and £600 from 2012 to 2013.

  • All looked after Children who have been in care for 6 months and are in full time education are eligible for the Pupil Premium.

  • Local authorities are responsible for distributing the Pupil Premium payments for LAC to schools and academies. In Dudley the payments are arranged by the Virtual School for Looked After Children.

  • Children educated in Dudley but looked after by another local authority, will have their their Pupil Premium paid through the authority that looks after them (not Dudley).

  • If a pupil moves school during the year both schools will be entitled to receive a proportion of the Pupil Premium.

  • If a child becomes eligible during the year they will be entitled to a proportion of the Pupil Premium.

  • The local authority has discretion about how the Pupil Premium is used for children educated in non-mainstream settings .

  • The Virtual School monitors the use of the Pupil Premium via the PEP and provides guidance and advice on how it can be spent.
