Dudley's Historic Environment

The historic environment is all around us and forms the physical backdrop to our everyday lives. Dudley Borough, in particular, has a rich and diverse character which has been shaped by the activities of people of the area over a long period of time. As a result the individual townships of the Borough have their own distinctive character that make Dudley a very special (indeed unique) place in which to live and work.

Dudley Council’s Historic Environment Section works to conserve the locally distinctive historic character of the Borough as a whole, both within historic townships and also in the spaces between and beyond them, rather than simply focusing upon special elements or areas.

This includes giving advice on issues relating to:

listed buildings,
locally listed buildings,
Scheduled Ancient Monuments,
other historic buildings and sites,
historic areas including conservation areas and
archaeological remains.
local character and distinctiveness

The Section also maintains detailed records of the many features which make up the historic environment known as the Historic Environment Record.
