The Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest' is made up of buildings or structures which are considered to be of national importance because of their architectural or historic features. The statutory list is compiled by the Secretary of State hence they are referred to as 'Listed Buildings'. They are given special protection against inappropriate alteration or demolition. There are around 300 statutorily listed buildings in the Borough of Dudley and the number increases yearly. Many of these buildings are a product of 18th and 19th century industrial growth, however there are earlier structures which show the development of building style over time. The Council has also compiled a 'Local List' of historic buildings in the Borough that do not meet the national criteria for inclusion on the statutory lists which are nevertheless worthy of protection and conservation in their own right. Detailed records relating to listed buildings and other aspects of the historic environment can be found in the Dudley Historic Buildings Sites and Monuments' Record (HBSMR).
