In January 2008, Brierley Hill was designated as the new strategic town centre for the Borough of Dudley. This was one of the decisions published in the Phase One Revision to the West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) which sets out the future long term plans for the transformation of the Black Country. This will enable plans to go ahead for more shops, leisure facilities, offices and housing all to be built in such a way to link Merry Hill, the Waterfront and Brierley Hill High Street together as one Centre.
Dudley Council is currently preparing an Area Action Plan for the Brierley Hill area which will guide this regeneration, to include Merry Hill, the High Street and the Waterfront, up to 2026. The Brierley Hill Area Action Plan will form part of Dudley’s statutory planning framework, and it will be the starting point for making decisions on planning applications in the area.
Consultation was previously undertaken on the ‘Preferred Options’ document in 2008 and on the ‘Policy Development Update’ early in 2009. These documents presented a vision for the future of Brierley Hill, a number of challenges and objectives and the favoured option to achieve the vision, together with further, more-detailed options and questions where appropriate. The reports were put together drawing on responses to the extensive consultation which had already been undertaken at the ‘frontloading’ and ‘Issues and Options’ stages, and also from the magnitude of previous work undertaken for the Brierley Hill area.
The results from these previous consultations was used to prepare the Brierley Hill Area Action Plan Publication Document which underwent public consultation between 30th November 2009 and 15th January 2010. The comments received from this consultation are publicly available to view through the Council’s consultation portal. The document was submitted to the Secretary of State on 26th February 2010 and an Examination in Public is expected to be held in December 2010.
