In January 2008, Brierley Hill was designated as the new strategic town centre for the Borough of Dudley. This was one of the decisions published in the long awaited Phase One Revision to the West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) which sets out the future long term plans for the transformation of the Black Country. This will enable plans to go ahead for more shops, leisure facilities, offices and housing all to be built in such a way to link Merry Hill, the Waterfront and Brierley Hill High Street together as one Centre.
Dudley Council is currently preparing an Area Action Plan for the Brierley Hill area which will guide this regeneration, to include Merry Hill, the High Street and the Waterfront, at least up to 2021. The Brierley Hill Area Action Plan will form part of Dudley’s statutory planning framework, and it will be the starting point for making decisions on planning applications in the area.
We have just finished a six week consultation period on the ‘Preferred Options’ document. This document contained a vision for the future of Brierley Hill, a number of challenges and objectives and the favoured option to achieve the vision, together with further, more-detailed options and questions where appropriate. The report was been put together drawing on responses to the extensive consultation which has already been undertaken at the ‘frontloading’ and ‘Issues and Options’ stages, and also from the magnitude of previous work undertaken for the Brierley Hill area.
Now that the statutory consultation period has ended, the planning team are considering all the responses and representations received which will be used to formulate a final submission draft. At that stage the document will be submitted to the Secretary of state for independent examination. It is anticipated that the Brierley Hill Area Action Plan will be adopted in October 2009. For more detail on the timetable, please refer to the Council’s Local Development Scheme.
A paper copy of the representations received on the Preferred Options report is available to view in the reception of the planning offices at 3 St James’s Road Dudley. The representations are also currently being made available to view on-line through the consultation portal. Once the Council has completed the officer’s recommendations and responses to the representations, these will also be made available for public viewing. To view the on-line representations, please follow the link below:
Once all the Council responses have been completed, they will be reproduced into a Preferred Options consultation report which will again be available to download on this website and a paper copy will be held at the Planning offices reception.
