Horse Keeping

Reasons for the Policy

Horse riding is growing in popularity. The Council will support this pursuit and also ensure that any development or use of land related to this will be accommodated in a way that does not cause harm to the local environment and local amenities.

Grazing can be a valuable tool for nature conservation management. Bark grazing by horses can also have a negative effect on the local environment as it can lead to the negative loss of trees and hedges. It can also be extremely damaging to grassland where overgrazing causes reduction in diversity. Exercising of horses is undesirable on any grassland of nature conservation importance.

Where planning permission is required for the provision of apparatus associated with horse keeping, its appearance should be in keeping with the area.
