Block 4 - Bell Street/Market Street
This is a mixed use area outside the retail core, dominated by the Leisure Centre and St. Thomas’s Church. The Market Street frontage is within the Conservation Area and the buildings fronting Bath Road are worthy of inclusion within an extension to that area.
Redevelopment opportunities are limited to the southern part of the block and should address the current dead frontage of the ring road. Drury Lane could be extended through to Bath Road to provide pedestrian access within any redevelopment. Preferred retail uses should be limited to shops of a scale and nature that reflect the distinctive character of the block. Large single units of floorspace over 2500m2 are considered inappropriate, especially those devoted to bulky goods and/or DIY. Within the block, the use of upper floors for residential or office uses is desirable.
The Church grounds provide the only green space within the Town and should be protected and enhanced.
