Urban Design

Urban design is an interdisciplinary activity involving planning, architecture, art, landscape and highways design. It promotes a common purpose amongst the various disciplines therefore it is not the concern of just one profession. Essentially the service is about promoting, creating, communicating and delivering places that people like to live work and play in.

The Urban Design service aims to ensure the urban environment is:

• Safe
• Clean
• Attractive
• Sustainable
• Vibrant

Urban design ranges from the provision of strategic policy frameworks that assist regeneration initiatives right through to a front line service which provides support at all stages of the development control process. 

Urban design is part of the Planning Service and delivers the following areas of work:

• Supplementary Planning Guidance: Detailed policy statements/guidance in conjunction with the Development Plan, for example guidance on aspects of community safety and residential development.
   
• Design for Community Safety 
   
• Development Briefs:That provides guidelines and a vision for the future development of sites 
   
• Planning Advice and Support: At pre-application, application and public local inquiry stages  
   

• Public Consultation: Discussing proposals for the future development of sites in the public arena 

• Advice for special projects and fund bidding
