All of the borough of Dudley is within a smoke control area therefore all combustion appliances must either burn smokeless fuel or the appliance must be an approved appliance to burn other fuels (wood, coal, etc) within a smoke control area. It is an offence to burn any fuel in a fireplace unless it is a smokeless fuel or the appliance is specifically exempted by law.

Daily Air Quality Report

As part of its duty to monitor the quality of the air in the borough, the council continuously monitors, and records the levels of a range of common pollutants at its automatic monitoring stations, and produces a Daily Air Quality Report.

Review And Assessment 

Since 1997 local authorities in the UK have been carrying out Air Quality Review And Assessment of air quality in their area. The aim of the review is to make sure that the national air quality objectives will be achieved. If a local authority finds any locations where the objectives are not likely to be achieved, it must declare an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). 

UK National Air Quality Strategy (NAQS)

The UK Air Quality Strategy aims to ensure that air quality in public spaces poses no significant risk to human health and quality of life.

Domestic Bonfires 

 Air pollution in Dudley Borough is a significant issue. Domestic Garden Bonfires can make it worse as burning garden waste produces smoke and pollutants that can damage the environment and be harmful to health.
