Air Quality Action Plan for Dudley

Dudley Council’s 2010 Further Assessment of Air Quality report confirmed that during 2008, concentrations of nitrogen dioxide were found to exceed the government's annual mean objective value of 40 µg/m3 at the following locations:

  • Netherton
  • Cradley
  • Pensnett
  • Sedgley
  • Brierley Hill
  • Quarry Bank
  • Hagley Road, Halesowen
  • Wordsley
  • Lye
  • New Street, Dudley
  • Himley Road, Lower Gornal
  • Stourbridge Road, Halesowen
  • Amblecote
  • Birmingham Road near to Burnt Tree Island
  • Buffery Road

The major source of pollution in these areas has been identified as road traffic.

Additionally, breaches of the hourly objective for nitrogen dioxide in Halesowen Road, Netherton are now under further investigation.

Air Quality Management Areas

Dudley Council is legally required to declare one or more Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) for those parts of the Borough in which the air quality objective is likely to be exceeded. Declaration of The Dudley Borough AQMA was completed in December 2007, amalgamating the former AQMAs of Brierley Hill and Sedgley.

Dudley Council has now completed a further assessment of these exceedence areas and drafted an action plan for improving air quality across the Borough. The general public and other relevant stakeholders were consulted on the draft action plan via this website and targetted promotional activities during 2010. Further information on the action plan consultation is held within the Dudley Community Engagement Database.

A summary of the consultation comments has been now been prepared and can be accessed from the Related Documents Section below.  The action plan has been updated to reflect input from the consultation process and changes to the wider policy framework. The revised Action Plan was accepted by Defra in May 2011 and was adopted by Dudley Council in September 2011.
