Since April 1993 Social Service Departments have been responsible for assessing whether people need residential and nursing home care. They are also responsible for paying for this care if there is no other source of funding. This is a list of care home approved by the Directorate of Adult, Community & Housing Services in which it will fund placements.
The first two parts of the list are divided into sections that correspond to the different area offices (access points) of the Directorate of Adult, Community & Housing Services. These are listed in the following order:
1. Brierley Hill (including Kingswinford, Wordsley, Quarry Bank)
2. Halesowen
3. Netherton (including Dudley)
4. Sedgley (including Coseley, Lower Gornal)
5. Stourbridge (including Wollaston, Pedmore)
Each section starts off with the local Directorate contact address and telephone number. Staff at these offices will be able to give you advice and assistance if you or a member of your family needs care. It is particularly important to contact one of these offices before you make any arrangements that the Directorate of Adult, Community & Housing Services might have to pay for.
Part one includes care homes in each of the five Directorate area offices that provide care to people who have residential care needs.
Part two includes care homes providing nursing care in each of the five Directorate area offices that provide care to people who have nursing care needs. Some of these homes may also accept people who have residential care needs only.
You should be aware that some care homes providing nursing care may also accommodate people requiring care of a residential nature only.
The third part of the list includes care homes and care homes providing nursing care that are situated outside the Dudley Borough in local authorities that have a co-terminal boundary with Dudley (ie. Sandwell, Staffordshire, Wolverhampton and Worcestershire) and with which Dudley Council has a contract. You may wish to consider these homes in addition to those within the Dudley borough boundary.
As homes vary considerably, you should contact those you are interested in directly to see that they offer what you are looking for.
The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) inspect all care home provision and the reports relating to such inspections may be requested from the care home itself or the Commission. The telephone number of the Commission for Social Care Inspection is 0121 423 5410 for homes within Dudley (and Sandwell and Walsall). Inspection reports are also available on the
CSCI website.
The Commission for Social Care Inspection have recently produced a publication entitled, “Social Care - Choosing the Right Service for You” available free from their website as above or by telephoning their orderline on 0870 240 7535.
The organisation “Counsel and Care” provides advice and help for older people, and produces two booklets, “The Brief Care Home Guide” and “The Complete Care Home Guide” available free by writing to Counsel and Care at:
