DSBP sets up social businesses, which provide opportunities for:

  • Employment preparation training
  • Real work experience in a real work environment
  • Development of social skills
  • Development of self-esteem and confidence
  • Vocational qualifications

Social Businesses include Quality Print Plus (a printing firm), Oasis Plus (a business support service), Greenwoods Plus (gardening and landscaping), Nellmonics (a records management service) and so on.

DSBP also provides work experience placements for people on New Deal, in partnership with Dudley Council for Voluntary Services.
The opportunities are available to people with a range of needs, including learning disabilities.

Training is open ended rather than time limited. Since 1996, some 200+ people have trained within DSBP. A variety of qualifications have been achieved from first aid and British Sign Language to CIAIT and IBT2. Some people remain in the group of social businesses acquiring further skills.  Others move on to open employment (22 people since 1996). Some people progress to the BBEC program and then to open employment. Others move to employment within the Social Businesses.

Funding is via Social Services and income from trading by the social businesses. There is also a fixed weekly payment for each New Deal trainee.
