Physical disability services

The Directorate of Adult, Community and Housing Services has a duty to assess the needs of physically disabled children and adults. This is often carried out by an Occupational Therapist within the Disability Services Team.

The aim of occupational therapy intervention is to promote, encourage and maintain the independence of the individual.  The needs of the disabled person’s carers are also of importance and therefore taken into consideration.

The assessment is generally carried out in the individual’s own home and deals with their daily activities, from getting up to going to bed, and includes such things as toileting, dressing and household tasks.

The result of the assessment could be one of a number of solutions:

  • Advice on a different way to perform a task.

  • Provision of a piece of equipment to achieve a task.  This could be a simple item such as a walking aid or a major item such as a bath lift to enable you t get in and out of the bath safely.

  • Recommendations to adapt your home in some way.  This may be a minor work, for example fitting grab rails or stair rails; or major work such as ramps for permanent wheelchair users or providing access to essential facilities within your home.

The minor works are usually quite straightforward but where major works are needed this involves a more complex assessment.  The Occupational Therapist will be able to advise you on the procedure.

We also have a Disabled Living Centre with a wide range of equipment available for assessment purposes.
