Tackling Obesity

Obesity has become a major public health epidemic.  Currently, around two thirds of the population of England are overweight or obese. Obesity has grown by almost 400% in the last 25 years and on present trends will soon surpass smoking as the greatest cause of premature loss of life. It is expected to bring levels of ill-health that will put enormous strains on Health and Local Authority services and will impact on society as a whole. On some predictions, today’s generation of children will be the first for over a century for whom life expectancy falls. (Select Committee for Health, 2004).

With figures revealing that 55% of adults in the borough are overweight or obese the Office of Public Health in Dudley, is implementing our obesity strategy developed in 2005, which identified opportunities and programmes designed to help with weight management.
