What is Mental Health?

Well being and mental health are terms often used to describe mental health.

What is Good Mental Health?

The Mental Health Foundation has defined a mentally healthy individual as one who can:

  • Develop emotionally, creatively, intellectually and spiritually
  • Face problems, resolve them and learn from them
  • Be confident and assertive
  • Play and have fun
  • Laugh, both at themselves and at the world
  • The ability to form and maintain good relationships with others
  • The ability to feel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotions.

Our mental health varies throughout our lives depending on our circumstances in much the same way as our physical health does.

Mental Health Problems

Mental health problems include a range of problems which can affect a person’s ability to get on with daily life from the worries and grief we all experience as part of everyday life to serious long term conditions.

Mental Health problems are amongst the most common health conditions that affect around a quarter of people in a year. Depression and anxiety are the most common health conditions.
