Beacon Hill TRA

The Beacon Hill Estate is situated on the northern boundary of the Borough of Dudley west Midlands, Dudley town centre is approximately 3 miles away. Beacon Hill tenants and Residents Association was formed in July 1998 after some enthusiastic volunteers had received training and advice in what was involved with being part of such an organization.  In a very short space of time Beacon Hill TRA became well known by other associations, various council departments, partner organizations, local councilors, as well as its own community.

The TRA have voiced our concerns and opinions upon issues not only relevant to the estate but also upon borough wide issues affecting everyone in Dudley. Our committee would like to stress that we work to a constitution set up by DBMC and adhere to it most rigidly in all that we attempt to achieve, only by doing this can we be open to any queries or complaints that might occur.

Our committee meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month plus two General meetings and an AGM which are held on a Thursday. The meetings are held at the Ex-Servicemen's Club in The Walk in Sedgley at 7.30 pm and our association is grateful to the club. General meetings and the AGM are ‘open to all’ and there will be council officers, police and other guests, so please feel free to come along and have a natter and meet other people from within your community.

We always need more support from local people so please come and join us. A growing number of local issues have already been addressed or are in process of being dealt with, for example, the passage-way ‘clean ups’ with improved lighting, the MEB sub-stations has been cleaned up, complete fencing and security gate at Beacon Rise Garage Site and security systems installed in the bungalows to name but a few. The TRA received funding to convert an old garage site at the Quadrant into a secure parking area with fencing and a gate, it is hoped that this will ease some of the parking issues on the estate. If you would like to give it a try then email our Housing Manager or contact on 01384 815168, it is a very secure place for parking with lighting.

Beacon Hill Celebrate St Georges Day

St Georges Day 2008

North Dudley Open House meeting in May was due to be held on the same day as The St Georges Day Parade in Sedgley.  A suggestion from staff and North Dudley Area Panel members was made to be part of the celebrations.  By doing this we could reach a wide range of people and offer various advice and information to
them. So on Saturday 26th April 2008, we erected a good sized gazebo, put up our tables and distributed lots of leaflets and we offered all kinds of help, advice and assistance.  We had an issues board which gave local people the chance to highlight what mattered to them, giving people a real chance to ‘have a say’.
Staff from North Dudley Area Office and volunteer members of Oval and Tudor and Beacon Hill Tenants and Residents Associations worked together to ensure that a good day was had by all.

Garage Site, Beacon

Beacon rise garage site

What a difference there is for the people who rent one of the new garages at Beacon Rise, they look clean smart and tidy. There are now 26 garages and secure parking places which we must all do our best to keep looking neat and tidy, plus everyone has a key to the main gate in Beacon rise. We would like to encourage you to please report any dumping of rubbish on this site so it can be removed.

Beacon Tower during winter

SEDGLEY BEACON AND TOWER

Since the beginning the TRA has been campaigning for the restoration of the grade 2 historic tower on Sedgley Beacon, we are also concerned about the state of the Beacon it’s self and how it is being used and abused. Over the years we have involved people from Dudley Council and other agencies in our efforts to get this worth-while project started. The costs involved in this project were given an estimate then of £170,000 for restoring the tower alone, with the help of DMBC we met with The Heritage Lottery Fund.  They came to see what we wanted and we were told we could get funding! Following a recent meeting we are hoping at long last something is going to happen, we have support from George Blackham who is from the local history society and Sedgley Police, who have asked if they can be involved through The Princes Trust, they are offering to clean-up the area around the Tower.

Sedgley Beacon is an area of outstanding natural beauty and contains rare species of flowers, plants, also an old quarry with fossils. We would eventually like to see Sedgley Beacon classed as a Nature Reserve with the tower being part of a visitor centre.  So we appeal to everyone for support with this valuable project. In conjunction with the BBC Black Country we have developed a web-site which gives details of our work so far, if you are interested then please visit the BBC Black Country website.
