Home Buy Scheme - Help for council tenants to by a home on the open market
If you're on a low income, you may be able to get help to buy a home on the open market. This also applies if you rent from a registered social landlord, such as a housing association. Home Buy is government-backed scheme, funded by the Housing Corporation, which has responsibility for registered social landlords (Housing Associations), in England.
If you qualify for help, it means that the government will contribute 25% towards the cost of your mortgage. You will not have to make repayments on this 25% equity in your home, only having to repay the money when you sell your home. This means that you have to pay back 25% of what your home is worth when you sell it in the future.
