Our approach to promoting Equality

A wide range of legislation exists which places duties on public authorities and other bodies, to promote equality and tackle discrimination. The Council’s equality scheme sets out in detail how the Council intends to meet these duties. It is in effect a strategy and action plan which summarises the Council’s approach to equality and diversity across all its services and in employment with the council.

The overall objective of the Council’s equality and diversity policy is to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment;

  • Promote equality of opportunity and

  • Promote good relation and positive attitudes between people of diverse backgrounds

  • In its employment policies, and practices, in its service provision and in its engagement with partners and within the communities of the Borough.
