The Directorate of the Urban Environment was formed in 2002 and brought together a diverse range of technical services with the prime aim of improving service delivery by encouraging far greater joint working between service teams.
 
The Directorate provides 100+ services across four main divisions - Culture & Community, Development & Environmental Protection, Economic Regeneration and Environmental Management, and are delivered by some 1,700 employees of which 90% provide direct front line support to the public. Operating from four key sites inaddition to a significant number of satellite sites that includes crematoria, parks, museums and leisure centres.
 
The Directorate is supported by a core Executive Support Team that provides high level strategic support to the Directorate Management Team in matters relating to policy,performance, project management, ICT and personnel, whilst divisionally based management support teams ensure effective day to day on-site administration.
 
The Directorate of the Urban Environment also has the Investor in People accreditation.
