Dudley Library to be refurbished...

As part of the Library Modernisation programme, it was agreed that Dudley Libraries be made bright, light and welcoming centres of the community. Dudley Library is one of the busiest of libraries, receiving around 5-5,500 visits per week and, although some updating has been introduced, the library needs a major re-organisation and updating. The lighting in the Library has been improved, and the public computers have all been updated, but the existing shelving is a hotch-potch of styles and there is a lot of old and tired looking furniture.

Engaging with users has shown that people like to spend significant lengths of time in the library. They like to be able to sit in relaxing seating, read newspapers, books and magazines, to have more areas for study, and be able to find stock in a logical way.  We have received adverse comments about the decor and the unattractive look of the library and the untidiness of the shelving. The location of the Children’s library was mentioned particularly by users as being unhelpful and too small.

Generally, people want a light and attractive library with plenty of study seating with tables and casual relaxed seating. They want areas which are quieter as well as those where regular and special events take place.

In order to address the above so that people can use the library in a more comfortable way, and to compliment the elegant building, the interior of the library is going to be transformed by redecoration and new shelving and furniture.

  • The First floor will close to the public from Monday 14th May for a temporary period while the work is undertaken. The First floor will then re-open in its new layout, and the work will commence on the Ground Floor, again for a temporary period of closure. The staff will endeavour to minimise disruption and assist users while the work goes ahead. We hope that you will love our new look and enjoy using the library even more.

  • Update:: As part of the current refurbishment and due to internal scaffolding and electrical works, Dudley Library will need to be closed on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th June. The Ground Floor will re-open again on Thursday 14th June as normal.

You can renew books online, or access other online services, and you can return your books to any library in the Dudley borough. Your nearest libraries are Netherton, Gornal and Brierley Hill.
