Cellars by Priory Street

Now that the new square is in the process of construction it has proved necessary to empty and record archaeologically the cellar range at the Priory Road end of the site that was first exposed in the archaeological evaluation.

The whole of this end of the site seems concerned with water management and drainage. The largest "cellar" is rendered internally and seems to have been used as a massive water tank. A drain in one corner allowed it to drain into the smaller "cellar" adjacent via a type of wooden sluice arrangement.
