Oil on canvas. Mulatto was a term used in the early 20th century for someone of mixed race parentage.

The young woman in the picture was a model at Birmingham School of Art who frequently "sat" for the students. This striking portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1933 and was presented to the Art Gallery by the Dudley Society of Artists in 1938.
