Birch was born in Cheshire and worked in Lancashire for the first part of his life. In 1897 he moved to Cornwall.

Lamorna was the name of the village where he lived, and he took the name to differentiate himself from another artist called Birch who was working nearby. Birch was a keen fisherman which perhaps explains the appearance of rivers in so many of his pictures.
