Dudley UnEarthed

On the lower floor the museum has its major interpretative displays in a recently refurbished gallery called ‘Dudley Unearthed’. The gallery features two time lines, one showing the place of the famous Silurian Geology of the area in the history of the Rocks of Britain and the other showing the place of the industrial revolution in the human history of the area.

Boring latin names are banished but if you want more information just ask !

We also have the chance to meet Dud Dudley who may have been the man responsible for some of the innovations of the Industrial Revolution almost a hundred years before the official start of that period.

The gallery is completed with show cases containing information on the famous Silurian fossils of the region and the Coal Measures which ensured that Dudley became the workshop of the world in the 19^th century. The Silurian display includes a copy of Sir Roderick Murchison’s book on the Silurian System and one of the fossils from our collection which he used in the publication.

The centre of the gallery is taken up with a three dimensional topographical map of Dudley showing the relationship between the important pieces of geology in the region.

The gallery features four audio visual presentations explaining the significance of the displays.

Beyond an unsafe looking mine entrance, complete with a geological fault, is to be found the second half of the gallery where regularly changing displays show other features of the geology both of the local area and of the world.

This includes information on the famous Dudley volcano.
