In this exhibition you will already have seen how the Greeks influenced our language and our architecture. Our art is also influenced by them and here we see some works from our own collection which show a direct link back to the classical world.
This large scale metal relief casting by Geoffrey Deeley, born in Netherton in 1912, shows the continuing influence of the Greeks.
The title is ‘the conquest of the air by man’ but Deeley has chosen to represent the Greek hero Aeolus chaining the winds
A Snapshot of The Greeks
The ancient Greeks produced some of the best pottery in the Ancient world. At the height of her fame Athens used her abundant clay deposits to produce beautiful red and black pottery.
The Greeks At War
We know a great deal about warfare in the Greek world. This is partly through the writings of Greek authors, partly through their illustrations on vases and partly through artefacts dug up by archaeologists
The Olympics
For most of the history of the Greeks the Olympic games retained an important place. It was a festival in honour of Zeus and took the form of the kind of games that were held in even earlier times to honour the death of a king or hero.
The Archaeology of the Greeks
Greek culture stretched back into the mists of time. Some of her earliest artefacts were 5000 year old stone tools from the island of Melos. This case displays artefacts from the earliest times up the beginnings of classical Greece.
Literacy
The ancient Greeks produced many of the earliest works of literature that have survived to the present day. As well as containing classical artefacts this caseshows us books and stories inspired by the Greeks.
Women
In Ancient Greece the role of women was primarily that of home making. They took no part in the political life of the state. In this case we can see artefacts used by women such as feeding bottles and weaving loom weights. However we can also see what women looked like from their pictures.
Men
Men played the leading role in the Greek states and we have displays on them as both warriors and athletes elsewhere. The Greeks gave us many important ideas that we still cherish today and so in this case we have chosen to display the ‘Symposium’ which was a drinking party where philosophy was discussed.
