Saxons and Vikings

Bethany Ferguson

The period of 410 to 1066 was traditionally known as ‘The Dark Ages’ as writing became rare and information was hard to find but in recent years all kinds of research has shed new light on this shadowy period of British History.

This long-term exhibition examines the artefacts that have been found from Anglo Saxon and Viking age and suggests new ways of looking at the period. The artefacts have been displayed in an environment that brings the Dark Ages to life and even includes a scale replica of a Viking boat.

Between the arrival of the first ‘Saxons’ in the 400s AD through to the 790s AD, a period of nearly 400 years the Saxons established themselves in the heart land of England. This exhibition traces the growth of these invaders that became settlers and looks at their far reaching legacy to us today.

All done with the aid of mannequins, dioramas, actual Anglo-Saxon artefacts and electronic captions.

We offer a fun and interactive KS2 'Invaders and Settlers' session for schools.
