King George V Wordsley Park in Dudley has royal connections. Part of the park is an independent charity and registered as a King George Field, which forms part of the National memorial to his late Majesty King George V, which specifies that the land is to be preserved for public recreation.
At the park’s formal entrance opposite Barnett Lane, ornate gates, displaying the Heraldic Panels inform the public of the royal connection. The right panel depicts a unicorn and the left hand side a lion.
The park is 7ha and is located close to the Wordsley Green shopping centre. The park has extensive recreational facilities, including tennis, football, a multi use games area and bowls along with, many areas of managed flower beds and grass, over its sweeping landscape. The park has large areas of open flat grass, ideal for team games, along with smaller shaded and un-shaded areas perfect for picnics and leisure activities. There are some interesting trees in the park, including Cedars and Monkey Puzzles. Of interest to children is, from this park, a whale's tail which can be seen in one of the adjacent school grounds. The park offers a selection of managed pathways, making walking an optimal choice, for all individuals within the community.
Wordsley Park had an active Friends Group Friends of Wordsley Park. The group formed with the aim of getting local people back into the park to enjoy it for sport and recreational pastimes, and assisted with the Liveability improvements on the park. The group helped to promote a greater awareness of the benefits of using public parks and worked hard to improve both the environment and the facilities within the park. Projects included repair work to the old coach house, a holiday play scheme, provision of bins and seating benches and a Multi Use Games Area. The group are no longer active, but if you are interested in assisting with future plans and events, please contact the Liveability Team for more details.
