Stevens Park, Wollescote
History
Stevens Park in Stourbridge has housed families for many years. Dating back to 1282 when the hamlet of Wlfrecote was home to two families. The park is now formed around Wollescote Hall, this grade two listed building was given to the people of Lye and Wollescote by Ernest Stevens in 1930. The hall was to benefit the community with the provision that there would be no discussions of politics, drinking of alcohol and ball games on Sundays. The hall was rented out to Worcester Education Department as an annexe to Folley College Art Department in 1971 but the building fell into disrepair soon after the college left the building. In 1991 renovation work commenced and it is now occupied by the Lye/Wollescote Sons of Rest and part of the Social Services Department of Dudley Council.
Description
The park is 27ha and has extensive recreational facilities and many areas of managed flower beds and grass, over its sweeping landscape. The most spectacular of these areas are the two National Plant Collections, which hold their own open days and the Arboretum. The park has large areas of open flat grass, ideal for team games, along with smaller shaded and un-shaded areas perfect for picnics and leisure activities. One of these large areas is utilised as a football pitch, by a variety of teams over the relevant season.

Another additional large grassed area, has two 5-a-side areas with goals. Over Wollescote road, there is a large area of playing field, which houses the cricket strip. The centre of the park holds 3 Tennis courts,
Crown and Flat Green bowls. This park hosts spectacular views to surrounding countryside and back into the Black Country. The lower North Eastern area of the park houses Ludgbridge brook which runs through a heavily wooded tree line, which is a haven for numerous types of wild life. The park offers a selection of managed pathways, making walking an optimal choice, for all individuals within the community. This park is part of a project that provides parks activities, follow the link to find more information.
