The Borough’s canal network is important for its archaeology, nature conservation and recreation, as well as both economic potential for tourism and the provision of high quality environments for new development.
The Council’s “A Strategy for Dudley’s Canals” provides guidance which includes:
setting out the strategic and local policy context which governs development of canals and their surroundings;
setting down guidelines for all future development on the canalside;
providing a descriptive account of the canal over its whole length; and consequently
identifying opportunities for new development and other environmental enhancements.
The Strategy also discusses the issues associated with the restoration of former canals and offers some direction for future work in this regard.
