Victoria Cross memorial

August 23 2017

Here is a statement from Dudley Council in regards to a damaged Victoria Cross memorial in St Michael's churchyard in Brierley Hill:

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environmental services, said:

“We have no evidence to suggest that this was damaged by a lawnmower and we had no reports from our staff. Since this was brought to our attention, we have spoken to operatives and inspected the stone and are unable to determine how the damage was caused. The Victoria Cross Trust, which is dedicated to the upkeep of the graves, has also said there are a number of potential causes of the damage. We do take this matter very seriously as this is a very important memorial paying tribute to a local hero and we would urge anyone with any information to come forward as soon as possible.”
