What happens to our recycling

Paper and Cardboard

Paper and cardboard are taken to Smurfit Kappa’s Birmingham mill where they are recycled back into new cardboard.

Food and drink cans

Plastic bottles and cans are taken to a sorting facility in the West Midlands. Magnets are used to separate the steel cans from the other materials; plastic bottles are then separated by polymer and colour, finally an eddy current separator is used to sort aluminium cans from any unsuitable items that remain.

Glass bottles and jars

Glass bottles and jars are taken to Yorkshire based Berryman’s. Here machinery is used to sort the different colours of glass which are then used to make new glass packaging.
