Help at home

If you need practical help in the home with your personal care needs such as

  • getting up and going to bed
  • washing and dressing
  • help with toileting
  • preparing meals

you will need to contact adult social care services for advice and, if appropriate, a referral for assessment.

Assistance with meals

People who require assistance with their meals can request a social care assessment from the access to adult social care team.

Delivered meals

If you wish to make your own arrangements, there are a number of local and national commercial organisations offering to deliver meals. Take a look at the Dudley Community Information Directory for 'meals provision'. If you are able to get out but need help with shopping, the Directory has details of which shops will offer help.

Social Centres/Luncheon Clubs

There are clubs across the borough. These are organised by volunteers and meals are provided. The clubs offer not just a lunch but a social opportunity too. See the full list on the Dudley Community Information Directory.

Supporting People

The 'supporting people ' programme helps  people who perhaps do not need 'personal care' but could use help to learn independent living skills such as how to manage budgets, eat well and stay healthy and either find suitable housing or help them to keep their existing housing if they are risk of being evicted or repossessed.  To access this support you can contact any of the relevant service providers or contact the Supporting People Team on 01384 814647.

Enabling community support

The enabling community support service provides a range of practical help, advice and support to older people, aged 60 plus, in their homes. It is intended for people who live at home but who need a little extra support on a short term basis, to live independently, happily and successfully.

Living Well, Feeling Safe

The Living well, feeling safe scheme is a partnership scheme, offering older people living across Dudley borough, practical safety, security and wellbeing advice, in their own home.

The partnership scheme is made up of the council, together with other local organisations – Age UK Dudley, West Midlands Police, Victim Support and West Midlands Fire Service.

Falls Service

Dudley Falls offers a complete service for those people over 65 years and living in Dudley Borough who have fallen and want to regain their confidence and maintain their independence whilst living at home. We look at all the reasons why you may be at risk of falling.

Other options

You can also of course make your own arrangements. Dudley MBC does produce an approved list of care at home providers to assist you in this.

There are, however, many other providers of care services who are not on our approved list. This does not necessarily mean that they will not provide good support - it may be that they just have not asked to be included - but it is always as well to do your research before you choose a service - just as you would with anything else.

You may find the Care Quality Commission website helpful. There, you will find independent reports for a wide range of home, residential and nursing care providers.

A number of other organisations give advice and information on what to look for and how to keep yourself safe - see the links on the right.

Alternatively our partner Safe and Settled can help people find the best care options for their circumstances. We work with this organisation to ensure that people who don't meet our eligibility criteria, or who are self funders, or who simply want to organise their own care and support, have access a to professional, expert, impartial care advice service.

Fix-a-home

The fix-a-home directory is a list of tradespeople who have been vetted by Dudley Trading Standards and Age UK Dudley. They include cleaning services, gardeners and people who specialise in home maintenance.
