Visitors can come to the centre during opening times without a prior appointment. However, we do have a booking service for resources such as computers and tables (in the search room). You can also request documents in advance.

Many of the records held at the centre are unique and irreplaceable. For this reason you will need to register with us before using the search room and regular visitors will need to join the CARN scheme - there is no charge to join.

CARN stands for County Archive Research Service Network. The CARN scheme is a nationally recognised system of reader's tickets for local authority record offices and provides access to archives across England and Wales.

Dudley is part of the County Archive Research Network. Tickets issued by other offices can be used here.

Getting a ticket is easy and it won't cost you anything; all you need is two forms of identification. For more information please visit the CARN website.

If you do not have the correct ID when you visit us we will not be able to issue you with a CARN ticket; however, we will issue you with a temporary ticket for a single day. It will be necessary to acquire a CARN ticket if you intend to use the archive more frequently.
