Volunteering

The Archives and Local History Service wants to involve the local community in preserving the heritage and culture of the borough we live and work in.

Volunteers are a vital part of The Archives and Local History Service, providing help and expertise to support our work. We welcome new members to our volunteer team, so please contact us if you'd like to join us at the centre.

During the Big Move (when we moved to the new centre in 2013) our volunteers helped to ensure our archive and local history collections were prepared for the move.

Now that we are settled in the new centre there are a number of tasks that our volunteers are involved with including:

  • re-packaging our collections
  • search room buddying
  • computer buddying
  • indexing and transcribing records
  • cataloguing and listing records
  • digitising photographs
  • helping at events
  • promoting the service.

Tasks vary according to service needs and the volunteer's interest and available time. We offer short term opportunities such as work experience and work placements, as well as longer term opportunities which require a weekly commitment. We also welcome applications from students interested in a career in archives.

For more information about becoming a volunteer please contact us. You can also view our Volunteer Policy on the Policies page.
