Nationality Document Return Service & Nationality Checking Service

These services is a partnership between UK Visas and Immigration of the Home Office and some local councils in England and Wales.

The Nationality document return service (NDRS) is for applicants who apply and pay on-line only and would like to keep their requested supporting documents. The NDRS service can copy and send your documents securely to the Home Office on your behalf.

The Nationality checking service (NCS) is for applicants who wish to apply by completing a paper form and send it to the Home Office with the supporting documents. The NCS service check applications are fully completed, copy supporting documents and send them securely to the Home Office.

Nationality document return service (NDRS)

People wishing to apply for British citizenship have to complete the application and pay on-line with the Home Office https://visas-immigration.service.gov.uk/product/nationality-an for adults or https://visas-immigration.service.gov.uk/product/mn1 for children.

Dudley Council provide a document return service by appointment only. Your appointment must be within 10 days of submission of your application to the Home Office.

For a fee, specially trained staff will copy and certify your supporting documents that were requested on-line by the Home Office when you applied. It is your responsibility to ensure that you provide all appropriate documents in support of your application, we cannot advise which documents you should submit.

We cannot copy your applicant checklist, referee page with photograph, Life in UK test certificate and the passport application and photographs - originals only must be submitted.

The aim of the scheme is to both speed up the application process and enable applicants to keep their original documents.

The service is regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner

Our Fees until 31st March 2018 (including VAT)

  • Single Application:  £50

  • Child Application: £25 per child when applying at the same time as a parent. Child applications submitted without a parent's application are charged at £50

  • plus postage as shown below

  • fee covers the copying of up to 30 pages. Additional pages are charged at £3 per 10 sheets

IMPORTANT: You will need to bring a credit or debit card to your appointment to enable the additional charges to be paid. We cannot accept cash payments.

Nationality checking service (NCS)

People wishing to apply for British citizenship have to complete a form and send it to the Home Office enclosing important documents such as passports. 

Often applications are delayed as forms are completed incorrectly and have to be returned for amendments.

Dudley Council provide an application checking service by appointment only.

For a fee, specially trained staff will check applications and take photocopies of important documents to send to the Home Office.

The Home Office application form for nationalisation and guidance notes can be obtained from the UK Visas and Immigration of the Home Office website.

The service is regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner

Our Fees until 31st March 2018 (including VAT)

  • Single Application:  £95

  • Couple Application: £140

  • Husband, wife and up to 2 children:  £180

  • Child Application: £90 per child

We usually have NCS and NDRS appointments available within 1 week.  

To book a NDRS or a NCS appointment you need to complete our online NCS form. We will contact you as soon as possible, usually the same or the next working day to make a confirmed booking and take the payment over the telephone. Please advise us when we call you if you require a NDRS or NCS appointment. We need to have the payment before you attend; please do not attend without making an appointment as you will not be seen. Please do not telephone to book an appointment as you will be asked to complete the on-line form before we can make the appointment.

Please note, applicants without supporting evidence of their knowledge of English will not be accepted. It is very important that you complete the latest version of the application form AN as earlier versions cannot be accepted.

Passport applications

Applicants using the nationality document return service have the option to bring their completed passport application form and payment to their appointment to be processed alongside their citizenship application for an additional fee of £10 per application. You must bring your completed from to your appointment along with the appropriate Passport fee. Once you have attended a citizenship ceremony you will receive your British Passport within a few days. If your citizenship application is unsuccessful you will lose the fee that has been paid to the Passport Office. Please read the notes below before attending your appointment. We cannot provide this service if you are submitting a paper application (NCS).

1.    Applicants should complete sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 (if applicable) and 9 of the passport application form. They do not need to complete section 10 nor have the 2 photographs certified. Details of referees will be collected as part of the citizenship application. 

2.   The photographs submitted with both applications must be identical (i.e. from the same sitting) and comply with the photo standards as described in the accompanying guidance. Applicant’s name should be written on the back of the photographs. 

3.  Section 1: Any applicant within 6 months of their 16th birthday at the time of application must attend the appointment in person.  

4.  Section 2: Please do not enter a mobile phone number in section 2 of the application form. Please enter it in Section 8 instead. 

5.  Section 4: Grandparents’ details are not required. 

6.  The payment mandate on Page 25 of the Application guidance must be completed. Please ensure that the security number of the card is entered in the appropriate box

 7. If you are unsure about any requirements leave the section of the form blank and complete it at your appointment.

European passport return service

The European passport return service is provided by local authorities or nominated premium service centres.

Dudley MBC is a participating local authority and can photocopy your passport and forward a copy along with your checklist and application to the Home Office on your behalf. Your passport will then be available for you to use while your application is being processed.

The service is available at Priory Hall, Priory Park, Dudley DY1 4EU on Tuesdays and Fridays only. You do not need an appointment, just arrive at Priory Hall on any Tuesday or Friday (except for public holidays) between 9am and 2.30pm.

You must attend within 5 working days of submitting your online form. The service fee is £10 plus *postage and packing (please see below for postage charges) per application, payable at Priory Hall when you arrive for the service.

You must attend in person, no-one can attend on your behalf. You will need to bring your valid passport. You must have already applied and paid the Home Office fees on line and be in receipt of a checklist with a PNN number on which you must bring with you. IMPORTANT: Without the checklist you cannot proceed. It is your responsibility to ensure you have all the documents required.

The Home Office may contact you for further information after your application has been submitted.

Using the European passport return service does not guarantee the success of the application and the local authority cannot provide any advice. This service will not ensure that your form has been correctly completed and correct supporting documents submitted.

Don't forget to use the EPRS service at Priory Hall you must:

  • attend in person

  • bring your valid Passport with you and

  • bring your checklist with a PNN number on it and

  • bring all your documents as advised when you submitted your application on line with the Home Office
