Over a third of the Borough is open land. Half of this is countryside and is designated as Green Belt and Green Wedges. The rest is contained within the urban area and consists of a number of linked open areas and corridors. The Council will protect and enhance these areas through the following policies:

  • SO1   GREEN BELT AND GREEN WEDGES. The construction of new buildings will not be permitted except in very special circumstances and sets out criteria for allowing changes of use.

  • SO2   LINEAR OPEN SPACE. The networks are identified and the intended function described. Development harming this function will be refused.

  • SO3  ACCESS AND ENHANCEMENT OF GREEN BELT, GREEN WEDGES AND LINEAR OPEN SPACE

  • SO4  AGRICULTURE. The most fertile land identified on the Proposals Map will be protected.

  • SO5  HORSE KEEPING must take account of ecology, the landscape and the historic environment.

  • SO6  PARKS. Historic, Town and Local Parks are identified on the Proposals Map and policies of protection and enhancement are set out including recognition of Community Open Space.
