Reassessment of Incapacity Benefits

Between March 2011 and Spring 2014 customers receiving Incapacity Benefit, Severe Disablement Allowance & Income Support (IS) on the grounds of illness of disability will be assessed by the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) for Employment & Support Allowance (ESA).

If you are due to reach state pension age before 6th April 2014, you will not have your benefit reassessed.

If you are claiming IS on health grounds but you also fit other rules to claim IS, your benefit should continue.

Your benefit will not be reassessed if you are already claiming ESA.

If you are affected there is no need for you to contact DWP.

For more information regarding this reassessment process please see the DWP website

Personal Independence Payments

As part of the government changes to the welfare system, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) will be replaced by Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for people aged 16 to 64 on or after 8th April 2013.  This will be a gradual implementation process, with most claimants not being affected until 2015, however some will be affected earlier.

PIP is to help towards the extra costs arising from the impact of a disability, health condition or impairment.  Its based on how a person’s condition affect their ability to lead an independent life, not the condition they have.  Its based on an assessment of individual need.  The new assessment will focus on an individual’s ability to carry out a range of key activities necessary to everyday life.

The DWP will be writing to all existing DLA claimants to explain about PIP, however if you would like more information regarding this please visit their website www.gov.uk/pip
