Abandoned Vehicles

Is there a abandoned vehicle in your road, one that has been there for some time, has it got flat tyres, no tax, in a poor condition, is it an eyesore, is it being vandalised. Then read on for further details.

The Problem

Abandoned vehicles are an increasing problem both locally and nationally. Some car owners abandon old vehicles without caring for the consequences. This creates an eyesore and can encourage vandalism and arson, endangering lives, property and the environment. The Council considers a car abandoned when no one claims to own it.

Dudley Council is working together with the West Midlands Police and the West Midlands Fire service to deal with abandoned vehicles and nuisance vehicles as speedily as possible. Before the Council can deal with a vehicle certain enquiries have to be made, before the vehicle is removed, stored and eventually destroyed. To help us with this problem if you see a vehicle in your road, which you feel maybe abandoned, then contact the Council and arrangements will be made to inspect the vehicle.

Alternatively, if you have a vehicle you no longer want, rather than leave it on the side of the road, or on a grass verge contact a local scrap yard and arrange for its safe removal and disposal.

What to do

Please dispose of your unwanted vehicles by taking them to a vehicle breakers yard. Suggested contractors locally who can offer a service are:

  • Nine Locks Dismantlers 01384 76566
  • Shakespeare and Co 01384 296757
  • ELV Recyling Ltd, Vehicle Recovery, Depollution and Disposal, Unit 18 Premier Estate, Leys Road, Brierley Hill, DY5 3UP

How to report an abandoned vehicle

Please use our online Abandoned Vehicle Report Form or contact us using the details below.

As a matter of routine you may be asked to provide your name, address and phone number any information you give will be taken in a confidential manner. You will be asked for details of where the vehicle is, its colour, registration number, make, condition, how long it has been there, is it taxed and if so, the expiry date.

It is helpful if you can provide the following information:

  • Registration No:
  • Colour:
  • Make:
  • Model:
  • Condition:
  • Location:
  • How long it has been there:
  • Tax expiry:

What will we do

The vehicle will be assessed by a Council Officer, and if considered abandoned, will be removed as soon as is reasonably practical.  Abandoned vehicles can be removed from private land if they can be picked up without difficulty and if the landowner gives consent to the removal. If the landlord or land owner refuses consent the Council will not be able to enter the land to remove the vehicle.

What to do if your car has been moved

You can get it back if it has not been destroyed but only of you pay the Council’s statutory charges, and provide evidence that you are the owner. The charges are currently, £105.00 for the removal, £12.00 per day storage and £50.00 for disposal. If your car was stolen but we have moved it, provided you have notified the police and your insurance company any removal costs will normally be paid by your insurance company, who will be invoiced by the Council direct.

If your vehicle was undamaged your insurance company will return your vehicle to you at their expense.
