To explore and promote alternative forms of transport to:
encourage reduction in car use
reduce accidents
secure a competitive economy
improve health
reduce pollution and congestion
The debate about transport is centred around the rights of individuals to freedom of movement and the urgent need to reduce damage to our environment.
The council is committed to striking the right balance of providing for economic and social needs whilst reducing the need for travel and protecting the environment. This can only be achieved by working with a range of partners such as Centro and the Regional transport forum in developing a sustainable transport plan which takes into account regional land use planning. We are developing alternative transport modes such as cycleways and a network of footpaths with links to green spaces and some town centres. Cycling facilities have been provided for staff at certain offices within the Borough and there is also an annual bike week where cycling events are arranged to encourage cycling as a serious transport mode. The provision of bus and rail services is also being pursued.
Future Actions
The Council aims to:
Develop a sustainable transport strategy for the borough which puts forward actions to promote alternative forms of transport and raise awareness of the public.
Develop a cycling strategy which includes an action plan to increase the number of cycleways in the Borough.
Implement a strategic network of green paths
Lower personal injury rates in line with the council's accident prevention strategy.
Achieve the Midland Metro Link (light rail system) and in doing so, ensure it maximises the opportunities for economic revitalisation and urban regeneration
Secure implementation of Dudley Southern By Pass and the greater Brierley Hill transport package.
Implement measures to improve public transport provision, cycling and walking facilities and junction improvements at Merry Hill.
