Reasons for the Policy
The Government sees cycling as an important element of integrated transport policy. It has the potential to substitute for car journeys over short distances and also for leisure use. The National Cycling Strategy sets targets for considerably increasing the numbers of cycle trips over the next decade.
The Council’s own Cycle Strategy aims to develop the network of segregated cycle routes across the Borough. This will make use of canal towpaths, disused railway lines and public rights of way in order to avoid the area’s steep hills and heavily trafficked roads wherever possible.
