A Pelican Crossing is a safer place to cross, which allows pedestrains to control the traffic lights.

It is called "pelican" because it is a:

PEDESTRIAN
LIGHT
CONTROLLED
CROSSING.

Drivers should stop at a pelican crossing for a red or amber signal. Red and amber do not appear together on a pelican crossing, instead flashing amber is shown. This means give way to pedestrians; drivers may only proceed if the crossing is clear.

How do I use a Pelican Crossing?

  • When the red man is showing you should not cross.
  • Press the button and wait near the push button box.
  • Watch the red man signal on the post opposite.
  • When it changes to green, and you are sure traffic has stopped, walk straight across the road.
  • Walk between the metal studs in the road.
  • If the green man is flashing do not start to cross. If you are already on the crossing, carry on.
  • If there is a School Crossing Patrol working at the crossing, always follow their instructions.
