Obstructed Footways (Pavements)

Whether you're a driver or a pedestrian, you are entitled to a journey free of obstructions and this applies to every adopted road and footway (pavement) within the Borough boundaries. Anything that blocks the footway (pavement) is considered to be causing an obstruction to pedestrians, and can occur for a variety of reasons, including the following:

  • A skip, scaffolding or hoarding is obstructing the footway (pavement) .
  • No barriers around streetworks/roadworks and building work is affecting pedestrian safety.
  • Building materials are blocking the footway (pavement) .
  • An advertising board is blocking the footway (pavement) .
  • Banners or bunting is causing an obstruction.

Once we have been notified of an obstruction, we will investigate the site and take appropriate action. Obstructions are free to report, and we appreciate that sometimes you may wish to remain anonymous. On the other hand, if you are found to be the cause of an obstruction on a road or footway (pavement) , you may be liable for any costs incurred as the result of our action.
