Street Care and Maintenance

The Council looks after the roads and footways in the borough. The ongoing maintenance programs and repair works ensure that getting around the borough is as easy as possible. The various types of street maintenance are grouped into four activities:

  1. Operations is the routine work needed to keep the roads safe to use by filling potholes, salting the roads and clearing snow in winter.

  2. Preventative Maintenance is work such as thin overlays that arrest deterioration and help to stop roads and pavements becoming too damaged.

  3. Strengthening is the work needed to repair the roads when they are no longer strong enough for the cars and lorries that use them.

  4. Specialist activities is the work required to maintain safety fences, barriers and antiskid surfaces.

Potholes

Potholes on the road can be a danger to road users. Potholes on the pavement can lead to accident and injury for pedestrians. Therefore it is important to repair potholes whenever they occur. If you notice a pothole in the road, please tell us about it using our online contact form.

Gritting and Snow Clearance

We carry out precautionary salting on the roads if we are expecting the road surface to reach freezing – or if the snow is forecast. If you wish to report an issue with gritting and snow clearance please use our online form.

You can also view the gritting routes and the location of the grit bins online.

Drainage and Sewerage

The Council is able to offer advice on drainage and sewerage issues as part of its Public Health Duty. In the event that private drainage matters are not resolved, the Council will remedy the problem through use of its enforcement powers.

Maintenance of Road Drains and Gullies

Council is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of road drains and gullies that are on the public highway. These are the gullies that run along the kerbside, carrying rainwater away. If you wish to report a street maintenance problem please use our online form.

Road Markings and Signage

Dudley Council, as statutory highway authority for the Borough, is responsible for road markings and signage on the highway and investigates complaints of damage or deterioration.
